College Park, MD - The Wake Forest volleyball squad took its first ACC win of the 2000 season, with a 3-1 (10-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-11) victory at Maryland Tuesday evening.
Wake dropped the first game 10-15, but battled back in game two to even the match up at one game apiece. The Deacs were extended in the final two games, but were able to muster up enough offense to keep the Terps at bay. Maryland's 47 points marked the most points Wake has given up this season in a Deacon victory.
The Deacons were led by junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya, who registered 28 kills and 57 attacks in the match. Defensively, she also totaled 25 digs - a match-high. Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips assisted on a career-high 61 balls, while junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson recorded 14 kills. Senior middle blocker Corie Miles added 11 kills for the Deacs.
Sophomore setter Lindsay Davey recorded a career-high 62 assists in the loss for the Terps. Senior middle hitter Maren Stuart chipped in with 16 kills and sophomore outside hitter Amanda Ayres added 13 kills for Maryland.
Wake Forest, which improves to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC play, will visit the Virginia Cavaliers September 22 for the team's second conference match. Wake returns home October 4 for a conference showdown with Georgia Tech.
