Durham, NC - The Wake Forest volleyball team dropped its second match overall and its first conference match of the season, with a 3-0 loss at Duke Friday evening.
The Deacons fell behind early and were unable to catch up with the Blue Devils, who won the first game by the score of 15-2. Wake hit a season-low .000 percentage in that first game. Wake came back, however, registering 17 kills in the second game, but fell 15-9. The third game proved to be an offense-dominated game. The two teams combined for 44 total kills and, although the Deacs had 23 of those, the Devils held on to win 15-12.
Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya, who played only two games due to an ankle injury suffered against Virginia, came off the bench to record a team-high 17 kills and 16 digs. Defensively, the Deacons forced 15 errors by the Blue Devils. Junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson added nine kills, while sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips chipped in eight digs. Phillips also assisted on a team-high 43 balls.
"I think we have an excellent opportunity in playing Davidson after this tough loss at Duke," head coach Valorie Baker said. "Player for player, I think we have a stronger lineup, and a win would really give us the confidence we need at this point. We need to take advantage of that. We were able to give some of our freshmen playing time and I think they showed a great deal of leadership on the court, even with the small amount of experience they have right now."
Jill Sonne and Ashley Harris led Duke with 11 kills apiece. Setter Pamela Gottfred recorded a match-high 45 assists. Sonne, Bryn Gallagher and Josie Weymann each registered double figures in digs. Gallagher led the defensive charge with 14. Weymann and Sonne added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Deacons, who fall to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in ACC play, step out of the conference for an away match at Davidson September 30, before returning home to host Georgia Tech October 4. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.
