WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team dropped its first game of the 2000 season with a 3-2 road loss to fifth-ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC Sunday afternoon.
The Deacons got on the board early, with junior forward Jemima Cameron scoring off a penalty corner with 21:05 remaining in the first half. She was assisted by senior forward Jenny Everett and sophomore back Maria Whitehead. North Carolina answered 10 minutes later with a goal of its own. Abbey Woolley passed it into the cage above the outstretched arms of Deacon goalie Jaime Tressler at the 11:56 mark in the first half. Woolley's goal came off a Tar Heel penalty corner.
With the score knotted at 1-1, Wake Forest gave up a penalty corner to North Carolina as time expired in the first half of play. The Heels drew another corner after failing to score on the first, and got the go-ahead goal from Kristen McCann to put North Carolina on top to stay.
Each team scored a goal in the second half, but the Deacs faced their worst deficit of the season after McCann scored again with 16:14 remaining in the game. Wake fought back, however, with what would be the team's final goal from sophomore midfielder Heather Aughinbaugh with seven minutes remaining in the half.
"Our team knows they didn't put together their best effort today," head coach Jen Averill said. "We were successful at times when we stuck to our game plan but, overall, we lacked cohesiveness. We attacked individually instead of as a team and that really hurt us. When you don't play as a team, it opens up your weaknesses to your opponent."
Wake Forest recorded nine shots on goal, while the Tar Heels had 18. The Deacs took five penalty corners in the game as well.
Wake Forest falls to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play and will host 13th-ranked William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm in Kentner Stadium.
