WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team picks up its eighth win of the season, defeating UNC Greensboro in three games Tuesday night. The Demon Deacons swept the Spartans 30-11, 30-19 and 30-21. Wake improves to 8-5 overall, 2-2 ACC and UNC Greensboro falls to 1-15 overall, 1-5 Big South.
The Deacon win was a team effort with underclassmen stepping up to the challenge. Sophomore Jessica Hauff led the Deacons posting a season high 16 kills and had seven digs of her own. Junior Ashlee Phillips led the team with a .769 hitting percentage, posting 10 kills. She also recorded 47 assists, four digs, two block assists and one service ace.
Other Wake contributors were sophomore Katy de Roeck who posted two kills and six digs, redshirt freshman Tawni Shulte recorded eight digs in three games and freshman Kim Stern recorded a career high eight kills and four block assists for the Demon Deacons.
Senior Trina Maso de Moya registered 10 kills and 10 digs tonight as well.
Head coach Valorie Baker applauded her team's focus.
"Our team maintained focus throughout the match, regardless of the substitutions we made," said Baker. "We did a nice job off the bench and maintaining our level of play."
The Demon Deacons recorded a .458 team hitting percentage while holding the Spartans to .043 percentage. Sophomore Kim Dayton recorded a team high seven kills and five digs for UNC Greensboro. Wake improves its all-time series record versus UNC Greensboro to 19-15.
Wake Forest goes on the road this weekend to play Virginia and Maryland. The Demon Deacons face the Cavaliers Friday, Oct.5 in Charlottesville, Va. at 7 p.m. and the Terrapins on Saturday, Oct. 6 in College Park, Md. at 5 p.m.
