WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 21st ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team came away with a 2-1 win over regional rival Charlotte in Tuesday's nightcap at Spry Stadium following the Wake Forest men's team's 5-0 paddling of Triad foe, High Point. Emily Taggart became the Demon Deacon's all-time leading scorer with the opening goal and Stacy Roeck cashed in a penalty kick for the game-winner.
"We were able to salvage a win out of a bad performance," said Wake Forest women's head coach Tony da Luz. "Charlotte was emotionally charged and we did not react well. Hopefully we'll have Joline (Charlton) and Sarah Kate (Noftsinger) back for Saturday's game (at Duke) and we'll be sharper."
Wake Forest got on the board in the 34th minute when Taggart took a pass from Katherine Winstead up the middle, beat the 49er defenders and slid a shot into the lower left corner. The goal was Taggart's eighth on the season and 29th career goal, making the senior forward from Pleasanton, CA the all-time leading scorer in school history. The assist was Winstead's third in the last two games.
Charlotte fought back in the second half and in the 52nd minute Kim Miles got past Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan and fired a shot towards the Demon Deacon goal. Wake Forest defender Melissa Murray-Hobbs headed it away for the back save, but 49er defender Mikel Casey kicked in the rebound to knot the score 1-1.
Megan Turlip was whistled for a handball inside Charlotte's penalty box in the 59th minute setting up a penalty kick for the Demon Deacons. Roeck, a senior defender-turned forward from Solana Beach, CA netted the PK for the game-winning goal.
The 49ers had several opportunities to tie the game again, but couldn't get any past Regan, who made all five of her saves in the second half.
Charlotte falls to 7-5-3 with the loss and Wake Forest improves to 8-5-1 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 27 when they travel to Durham, NC to take on Duke at 7:00 p.m.
