Winston-Salem, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team notched its ninth consecutive victory tonight, defeating the Davidson Wildcats by a score of 7-0. The win ups Wake's record to 12-3 (3-1 ACC), while Davidson falls to 4-12 (0-6 NorPac).
The Deacons opened the scoring with 23:05 remaining in the first half when juniors Heather Aughinbaugh and Maria Whitehead set up a penalty corner for sophomore Lucy Shaw, who found the back of the net. With 2:25 remaining in the half, senior Jemima Cameron took a feed from Shaw and scored to give Wake a 2-0 lead. With less than 20 seconds remaining, Cameron found sophomore Emily Ruth, who in turn found the goal and the Deacons headed into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Shaw struck again less than five minutes into the second stanza, scoring off a rebound. At the 19:35 mark, Whitehead tallied off a feed from Kelly Doton to put the Deacons ahead, 5-0. Junior Carrie Neidhart scored twice in the final nine minutes, the second goal coming on a penalty stroke, to finish things off for Wake Forest. Deacon goalkeepers Katie Ridd and Merrilee Robbins had to make just one save in the victory, while Davidson's Cate Schenning recorded 19 in the loss.
Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill was happy with her squad's performance. "Once we settled down and stuck to our game plan, we executed very well," Averill said. "It was great to see everyone out their showing their strengths."
The Deacons will wrap up the regular season at home on Sunday when they take on the University of the Pacific. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
