WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 24th ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team defeated Liberty 6-0 Tuesday night at Spry Stadium. Six different Demon Deacons scored, for a shutout victory in their final regular season home game. Wake Forest, playing without the services of Emily Taggart or A.B. Robbins, who are two of its top three scorers, out shot the Flames 22-7, placing 14 shots on frame.
"We moved the ball well in the first half," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "It was quicker and cleaner than we've been in the past few games. It was a good game for team morale though. We got everybody in and it should help our training for the rest of the week, bringing everybody closer together."
Junior midfielder Gabi Lieb scored the opening goal in the 27th minute, when she headed in a pass from Stacy Roeck about 12 yards out, giving Wake Forest a 1-0 lead. The goal, the first of the season for Lieb, proved to be the game-winner for the Demon Deacons. Less than a minute later, Wake Forest struck again as junior defender Liz McDowell blasted a shot from just inside the penalty box that was too much for Liberty goalkeeper Natalie Mayer to handle. McDowell's goal, her first of the season, gave the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead, which they carried to halftime. She was assisted by Melissa Murray-Hobbs.
Liberty threatened early in the second half when Rachel Lyndon got behind Wake Forest's goalkeeper and fired a shot at the unguarded net. Demon Deacon freshman April Raymer leapt up and headed the shot away for a back save. Lyndon collected the rebound and fired again towards the Wake Forest goal and Raymer again stopped the shot for a second back save.
Raymer found Roeck up the middle in the 62nd minute, who scored to give Wake Forest a 3-0 lead. Roeck, a senior forward from Solana Beach, CA, is second on the team with seven goals and two assists on the season. In the 73rd minute the Demon Deacons struck again with the same play, as Kathleen Andrews fed Meagan Mullins up the middle, who pocketed the shot into the lower right corner of the Liberty goal.
Raymer capped off a stellar night for Wake Forest when she fired a rocket from the top right corner of the penalty box into the back of the Flames' net. It was Raymer's first collegiate goal.
Sara Creighton added a sixth and final goal for the Demon Deacons with three seconds left in the game when she connected with a pass from Lisa Senecal, 12 yards out, popping it into the upper right corner of Liberty's goal.
Mayer made eight saves on the night for the Flames. Wake Forest starting goalkeeper Erin Regan shared the shutout with Kenna Healy.
Wake Forest improves to 9-6-1 on the season while Liberty falls to 8-6-2 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Friday, Nov. 2, when they travel to Charlottesville, VA, where they will close out the regular season against No. 15 Virginia at 7:00 p.m.
