Clemson, SC - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team was defeated by 10th-ranked Clemson 1-0 on the road on Saturday night. It was the regular season finale for the Deacons who slide to 13-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the ACC.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on Ian Fuller's goal. He scored on a play that appeared to be well offside to the Wake Forest players, bench and also to many of the 1,288 Tiger faithful in attendance at Riggs Field. Despite the arguments from all 11 Wake Forest players and the Wake Forest bench, the goal stood and proved to be the final margin of victory for the Tigers.
Saturday's contest was a physical, whistle-filled game that featured three first half yellow cards and a combined total of 41 fouls.
After the early goal, Wake Forest spent the remainder of the game trying to draw even. Nearly the entire second half was played in the Clemson end as the Deacons outshot the Tigers 7-0 in the second stanza. On several occasions, it appeared as though the Deacons would tie the game. Less than two minutes before halftime, Kevin Wickart lined a shot over Clemson keeper Doug Warren who was caught out of position. But the shot sailed just over the crossbar.
The Deacons' best opportunity, though, came with just 15 minutes remaining when Christian Lonteen stripped a Clemson defender just outside the top of the penalty area. He walked in alone but Warren robbed Lonteen from point blank range with a sliding kick save.
Wake Forest outshot Clemson for the game 12-7. Clemson's goalkeeper Doug Warren made six saves and the Deacons' goalkeeper William Hesmer made three saves.
In just four days, the Deacons will be Clemson-bound as the Tigers host the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament beginning Thursday at Riggs Field. Wake Forest will be the #4 seed and will face #5 Duke on Thursday. First round game times are TBA. In their regular season meeting on Nov. 3, the Deacons defeated the Devils 2-0 at Spry Stadium.
