Wake Forest vs. UNC-Wilmington Nov. 12, 2001 - Postgame Quotes

Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser "We were very fortunate to win. We beat a good basketball team. Give all the credit to Coach Wainwright and his team. We just found a way to win. We had several chances to go up on them in the second half, but I just didn't think we had that killer instinct throughout the game. But I was pleased with the kids' resolve. They executed that last play very well."

On the seniors' performance: "That's what seniors are supposed to do - step up. They certainly made the big plays tonight."

On UNCW's performance: "It was disconcerting that on seven or eight of their key baskets, we weren't even near them. We had too many defensive breakdowns, we didn't switch when we were supposed to. I thought we looked very tentative. I thought we tonight we played not to lose. You have to play to win. We talk about that today. I thought we came out very tentative. We were very fortunate to win."

On the last play of the game: "That was the play we designed. We've been running that play since I was a high school coach. We called it 'Hale' after Steve Hale at North Carolina. I give credit to my coaching staff. With a new staff coming in, sometimes you don't get to put in all the plays you want to put in right away. We just put that one in Saturday night. The guys exceuted it - Murray threw a great bullet pass inside and Darius finished it off. It also probably worked to our advantage that he missed the free throw, too, although it wasn't in our original plan."

Wake Forest's Ervin Murray On the last play: "They thought we were going to Craig. I faked the pass and they bit. Then I threw it to Darius."

"Tonight had a different atmosphere. There's was lots of hype. We even listened to music before the game. I feel good. It seemed like March Madness out there. We are ready to get better."

"I'm going to be a leader. I'm here to fill in the void, give whatever it takes to win. I know there's a spot for me on the team. I just got to get in there and play hard."

Wake Forest's Darius Songaila On the last play: "You've got to give credit to the coaches. It was a good pass by Ervin. I was glad to make the last shot. I didn't see it go in, but I knew I made when everyone jumped on me."

"They were a very good team. It was a tough game for us. They played all 40 minutes. We need to play these games so we can play better later in the season. It was a good test for the team and Coach Prosser. They gave everything they had."

UNC Wilmington Head Coach Jerry Wainwright "I'm proud of my team. They stood the test and hung in there. We certainly had an opportunity to win. They had a player make a great catch from a great passer. I really like Ervin Murray. He's a wonderful player, and Darius makes great catches and great shots. That's why he's All-Conference."

"I feel like we have a good basketball team. Skip's got a really good team. I hope we can meet in post-season."

On Brett Blizzard: "He's a wonderful player - an all-purpose guard. We used him more at point guard tonight, because we have Lou Chapman, a freshman who we're trying to break in. Brett can play anywhere in the country. He's got a great game."

On Joel Justus: "He had a good second half tonight. When he's in there he makes things happen. He's a good player. He took the load off of Brett in the second half."
