Volleyball Falls To Florida State In Quarterfinals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Alex Sevillano registered a match-high 17 kills and added seven digs as No. 4 seed Florida State defeated No. 5 seed Wake Forest, 3-0, (30-23, 30-26, 30-27) to advance to the semifinals of the 2001 ACC Volleyball Championship at Tully Gymnasium. This is the second consecutive year the Deacons have lost in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
Florida State (16-11) will now face the winner of No. 8 Virginia/ No.1 Duke match at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Wake Forest falls to 18-11 overall.
Wake Forest started game one with a 10-6 advantage, but saw Florida State use a 9-1 run to take the lead for good at 15-14. The Demon Deacons moved within 20-19, but FSU closed the game on a 10-4 run to win 30-23. Sevillano led FSU with eight kills in the frame.
Trailing at the start of game two, 5-3, the Seminoles used a 10-2 spurt to open up a 13-7 lead following a kill by Erica Bunch. The teams traded points before Florida State prevailed, 30-26. There were 14 ties in the third game as neither side could take control. Florida State took the lead for good at 26-25 when Bunch again had the key point on a cross-court kill. She finished with eight kills and 10 digs.
Wake Forest was led by first-team All-ACC performer Trina Maso de Moya who had 16 kills and 14 digs. Margaret Davidson added 11 kills for the Demon Deacons. Kristen Frye contributed 13 kills for Florida State while Norisha Campbell had nine kills.
The Demon Deacons will finish their regular season participating in the Turkey Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Wake will play Alabama on Friday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. ET and MTSU on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. ET.
