CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The 24th ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team fell 2-0 to No. 15 Virginia Friday night at Klockner Stadium. Virginia freshman Lindsay Gusick led the attack with both goals. It was the final regular season game for both teams and the Demon Deacons finish the season fifth in the ACC with a 3-4 conference record, while the Cavaliers end up second in the league with a 5-2 mark.
After a scoreless first half Gusick scored in the 58th minute when she took a pass from Taylor Wood and dribbled around Wake Forest's goalkeeper for the game-winning goal. Gusick got loose on a breakaway in the 76th minute and added another goal, unassisted, when she got around the advancing Demon Deacon goalkeeper again and dribbled it in for the score.
Virginia out shot Wake Forest 9-1. Junior midfielder Katie Johnson was the Demon Deacon who got the shot off and it was saved by Jodi Clugston, who earned the shutout victory.
Wake Forest falls to 9-7-1 on the season with the loss and Virginia improves to 13-3-1 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the ACC Championship, that Wake Forest is hosting at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest, the five seed, will face the four seed, Clemson, at 8:00 p.m. The entire bracket will be announced following the conclusion of ACC play on Sunday, Nov. 4.
