WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest volleyball will add two walk-ons to its 2002 roster. Klarysa Henry of Houston, Texas and Courtney Quay of Bloomfield, Mich. are the new additions. Head coach Valorie Baker is excited for the new talent and looks to fill big holes left by seniors Trina Maso de Moya and Margaret Davidson.
Klarysa Henry
Henry will walk-on to the team after graduating from Stratford High School in Houston, Texas. The 5-9 outside hitter and defensive specialist played for the Texas Elite 18-1.
In high school, Henry led Stratford to second place in the state with a 36-5 record this season. In 2001 she was named to the High School Sports' "Team of the Week" and made second team All-District. Henry was named MVP of her team in 1999 and 1998.
In 1998-99 Henry played for the Texas Tornadoes club team and they placed 23rd at nationals. In 2000-01 she played for the Texas Elite 17-1, who finished 11th at nationals and then for the Texas Elite 18-1 in 2001.
Henry was born on May 20, 1984 and is the daughter of Steven and Krys Henry.
"Klarysa Henry has played for a competitive club team. That training will acclimate her to college volleyball in the ACC," said Baker.
Courtney Quay
Quay, a Michigan native, will walk-on to the Deacon squad. She graduated from Cranbrook Kingswood School where she made the first and second team All-Metro Conference and enjoyed being the Metro Conference Champions for two years, 1999-2001.
The 6-2 middle blocker and right side hitter was a member of the USA Michigan 18 in 2001.
Quay was born on October 30, 1983 and is the daughter of John and Martha Quay.
"Courtney Quay brings a lot of size to our squad. She is a good blocker. She is concentrating her training only on volleyball this spring instead of playing golf for Cranbrook. This will help prepare her for next season at Wake," said Baker.
Henry and Quay complete the four additions, including Erin Borhart and Christy Williams, to the 2002 squad. Head coach Valorie Baker is looking forward to the depth that the new roster will hold.
"Erin Borhart is a very polished player being only a senior in high school. She has very strong instincts on the court, not only viewing the opponent but also in working with her own teammates. She has very good court awareness."
"Christy Williams has played at a high level. The transition from high school to college will be minimal due to her experiences. She is a very strong offensive player in the middle as a result of her quickness and versatility."
2002 Outlook
Baker will look to her undergraduate players to fill the two holes that senior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya and senior middle blocker Margaret Davidson will leave.
"We are losing two All-Region players, Margaret and Trina. Next year will be a transition year for us offensively. As the season unfolds players will step up. It will depend on how players develop this spring and summer. Offensively we may evolve to a right or middle offense."
"Defensively I am very confident. Valerie Rydberg is one of the best ball control players in the league even though she redshirted this season. She will help fill the void of Trina leaving."
Setter Ashlee Phillips will be a senior next year and will guide the Deacon offense.
"There is a lot of promise and surprise in young classes. You have to step back and wait to see who evolves."
