Wake Forest vs. SC State Dec. 7, 2001 - Postgame Quotes
Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser
"I was concerned because last year against South Carolina State we were by seven at the half, and we had 24 turnovers. We didn't play well. We wanted to try to put away the game early. The kids played extremely unselfishly. We didn't play a perfect first half or second half, but we played well and extremely unselfishly. Ever since I came in from the first practice they have impressed me with how unselfish they are. We've been trying to establish to the kids what they can accomplish as a team when no ones cares about who gets credit."
"Once we had the game in head I had the dilemma of deciding who goes in. I didn't want any of the guys to get hurt, but at the same time I wanted some of the guys to get minutes. The only way Levy, Danelius and Downey will get better is if they get minutes."
"I think we've been trying to inject emotion into this team. They're all a great bunch of guys, but sometimes they need to have a tougher edge. We want the guy to go down there and throw it in with energy. If they lay it in, it's two points. If they dunk it, it's two points. But sometimes when they dunk it it's worth more than two points psychologically.
South Carolina State Head Coach Cy Alexander
"I congratulate Wake Forest on a great game. In my fifteen years of head coaching, it was the second worst beating I've ever had. The other was by Duke when they had Cherokee Parks and Grant Hill. They beat us by 50 points. I want to congratulate Coach Prosser. His team totally embarrased us. They beat us in every facet of the game. Wake came out with a high lever of energy. We knew they were going to do that. Our guys didn't respond to the challenge. We came off our best game of the season on Monday, and we didn't meet the challenge Wake Forest brought to us. They exploited everything - inside, outside, everything. They beat our butts tonight. We just have to throw this game out - there's nothing we can take from this game that is positive."
"I hope they (the players) see what it is like at the upper Division I level. Wake Forest played tremendously well, but we didn't accept the challenge. Wake Forest took it to us, and we didn't stand up."
Wake Forest's Darius Songaila
On the addition of R.D. Montgomery:
"R.D. is very energetic, especially at practice. Sometimes we lack it in practice. Also, he's a big body."
On rebounding after a loss:
"We really needed the win after the loss at Kansas. We didn't respond well after the losses last year. So it feels good to get a win after a loss."
Wake Forest's Craig Dawson
"This was the best win. It was tremendously fun. If we play like that every night, we will win a lot of games. We didn't like how started out (against South Carolina State) last year. Coach showed us the first four minutes of last year's game to us at practice. Coach always says that every game you play is important."
