Winston-Salem, NC - Three newcomers will complete the Wake Forest volleyball roster as announced today by head coach Valorie Baker. Valerie Rydberg, Kim Stern and Morgan Havig will each join the Deacon squad in the fall.
Rydberg, from Lemont High School in Lemont, IL, comes from one of the strongest club programs in the country - the Sports Performance volleyball club out of Chicago. She will compete for time at the outside hitter and defensive specialist positions. "She was heavily recruited and we feel very fortunate to have a player of her caliber coming to Wake Forest," Baker said.
The Deacons second signee is Kim Stern, a middle hitter from Cincinnati, OH. Stern participated at the high school level at Mother of Mercy High School and played with the KVT Rockets club team. She also participates in basketball at Mother of Mercy and, at 6-2, will be the tallest Deacon. "I think Kim will come in and push our current players and will compete for us in the spot of middle blocker," Baker said.
Morgan Havig is the final 2001 Deacon signee. Havig, from Atlanta, GA, competed on a state championship volleyball team as a senior at Walton High School, but also has played with the Atlanta Juniors volleyball club team. She comes from an athletic family - her father played professional football with the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers. "I look for Morgan to compete to play the middle blocker position for us. She's a great addition," Baker said.
"This was a large recruiting class for us," said Baker, who enters her second season at the helm of Deacon volleyball. "I'm very excited for the aggressiveness and tenacity that this group of young ladies show toward volleyball and making our program better. We look forward to having them as part of our team."
The 2000 edition of the Deacons wrapped up the season with a 21-9 overall mark and a school-best 10-6 conference record.
