Women's Tennis Tops South Carolina, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Twentieth-ranked Wake Forest upset No. 19 South Carolina, 4-3, in women's tennis action at the WFU Indoor Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. The win was the Deacons' third-straight victory, and improves their record to 5-4 overall. South Carolina, who has dropped two straight matches, falls to 4-2 on the season.

South Carolina went up 1-0 after clinching the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Wake Forest's No. 1 duo of Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) and Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.), ranked No. 2 nationally, won 8-2 over USC's Jennifer Radman and Katherine Boyanovich. But the Gamecocks notched 8-3 victories at both No. 2 and 3 to claim the doubles point.

Wake's top four singles players then pulled out the win for the Deacons in singles, as Bielik, ranked fifth nationally, won 6-1, 7-6(3) over USC's 63rd-ranked Katarina Markovski. Bergman, ranked 13th nationally, on 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles against Radman. WFU senior Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, N.C.) had an easy time with her opponent, Lynn-Yin Tan, recording a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.

The match score was 3-2 after South Carolina notched a victory at No. 6 singles, as Leigh Eichelberger defeated Deacon freshman Elizabeth Proctor (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), 6-4, 6-3. Junior Maren Haus (Brielle, N.J.) then clinched the match for the Deacons, winning the tiebreaker in the final set for a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5(3) victory at No. 4 singles over Boyanovich. South Carolina gained one last point with a win at No. 5 singles for the final 4-3 score.

Wake Forest returns to action on Friday, March 2, when they travel to Tennessee for a 5:00 p.m. duel with the Lady Vols. Tennessee is ranked 15th nationally.
