Tallahassee, FL - The 24th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team dropped a 6-4 contest to 11th-ranked Florida State, giving the Seminoles a sweep of the weekend series. It marks the team's 12th straight loss at Dick Howser Stadium, dating back to 1995. Wake Forest falls to 19-10 on the season and 6-6 in ACC play.
Wake Forest trailed 6-4 going into the ninth inning and mounted a rally but fell short. With one out, the Demon Deacons got three straight singles from Jamie Athas, Cory Sullivan and Nick Blue. Athas scored on the last single but Blue was cut down at second base for the second out of the inning. FSU brought out closer Justin Lord who struck out Josh Hansen to end the game.
For the second straight day, the Demon Deacons got on the board first. With one out in the first inning, Nick Blue reached base after being hit by a Robby Read offering. He advanced to second on a balk and then scored on a single by Ryan Johnson. Johnson enjoyed an excellent series at the plate, going 7-for-11 with three RBI.
The Seminoles responded in the third with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. A walk and a double and those runners scored on an infield groundout and a sacrifice fly. FSU added a run in the fifth on another sacrifice fly and opened up a four-run lead in the sixth on Nick Rogers' two-run homer.
The Demon Deacons stormed back in the seventh with three runs. Wake Forest loaded the bases with one out for Cory Sullivan who singled to center. Jamie D'Antona trotted in from third base and Carlos Brackley slid under the tag, scoring from second. Nick Blue followed with an RBI single, scoring Jamie Athas. Pinch-hitter Josh Hansen flied out to center and Cory Sullivan was doubled up at second base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Florida State threatened to extend its lead with two runners in scoring position and two out. Karl Jernigan's fly ball into deep left-center was hauled in by a diving Carlos Brackley. The Seminoles tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on Blair McCaleb's second double of the day.
Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday against Appalachian State in Boone, NC. The next home game for the Demon Deacons is Wednesday against UNC Greensboro.
