BLACKSBURG, Va. -
The Wake Forest baseball team jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 18-9 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. The Demon Deacons scored a season-high 18 runs and won their fifth straight game, their longest winning streak since early March.
The Demon Deacons continued their trend of big innings, scoring six in the second and five in the fourth. In the second inning, after two singles and three walks, the bases were loaded for Jamie D'Antona's who unloaded them with a two-out grand slam. It was D'Antona's ninth home run of the season, an opposite field shot.
In the fourth inning, Wake Forest scored all five runs with two outs. The first two came in on a single by Ryan Johnson. Two batters later, sophomore catcher Stephen Ghutzman hit a three-run home run, a line drive that hooked inside the right field foul pole.
Virginia Tech mounted a comeback scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. But it wasn't enough as the Deacons responded with three of their own in the sixth on a wild pitch and RBI singles from Corey Slavik and Steve LeFaivre.
Wake Forest put the game away in the eighth, however, on LeFaivre's three-run blast over the right-center field wall. LeFaivre's fourth of the year gave the Demon Deacons an 18-8 lead. His four runs batted in marked a career-high and his three hits tied a career-best.
After being hit by pitch and walked twice, Cory Sullivan's hitting streak was in danger until the seventh inning. His single through the middle extended his hit streak to 13 games. Sullivan has reached base in every game this season.
The win also snapped a four-game losing streak on the road. The Deacons dropped three at Florida State and one at East Carolina.
Wake Forest (24-10) continues its seven-game road trip Wednesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, N.C. The Demon Deacons will face Appalachian State at 7:00 p.m. Senior Scott Siemon is scheduled to make his first start in more than a month due to a shoulder injury.
