Bea Bielik Nominated For 2001 Honda Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Wake Forest sophomore Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.) is one of four finalists nationwide for the 2000-01 Honda Sports Award. The annual honor is presented to the top woman collegiate tennis player.
After a national balloting process, the winner will become a nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year. Bielik is Wake Forest's No. 1 player in both singles and doubles, and is currently ranked fourth (singles) and eighth (doubles) nationally. An All-ACC selection for the second straight year, Bielik was the conference's flight co-champion at No. 1 singles. In singles this season she has posted a 30-5 record with 11 wins over ranked opponents.
Bielik pulled off a rare sweep this past fall when she captured both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA National Clay Court Championships. She has led her 17th-ranked Demon Deacon squad to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships, and next week will compete in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
Other nominees for this year's Honda Award in women's tennis include:Ansley Cargill of Duke, Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame and Laura Granvilleof Stanford.
In honor of Bielik's selection, the Honda Awards Program will donate $1,000 towards the women's athletic fund at Wake Forest University.
