Stone Mountain, Ga. - Wake Forest women's tennis players Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) opened competition today in the NCAA singles and doubles championships. Originally scheduled to take place at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, several of the first-round matches in both singles and doubles were forced indoors due to inclement weather. Matches took place at various indoor sites around the Atlanta area.

Bielik, who is seeded sixth in the 64-member singles bracket, opened play today with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Emmanuelle Berard of Alabama. She will face Raquel Kops-Jones of California in a second-round match at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Bergman opened competition against the defending national singles champion and No. 1 seed, Laura Granville of Stanford. Granville was successful on the first step to defending her title by defeating Bergman, 6-3, 6-1.

The Deacon duo of Bergman and Bielik have also teamed up in the NCAA Doubles Championship, where they are seeded alphabetically in the 5-8 group among the 32-team bracket. On Tuesday evening they won their opening-round match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson of Southern California.
