WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Wake Forest baseball coach George Greer announced the promotions of two assistants on Friday. Jamie Mabe takes the role of recruiting coordinator and Michael Holmes becomes the pitching coach, effective immediately.
Both Mabe and Holmes were part of the staff that guided the Demon Deacons last season to 44 wins, the second-most in school history, an ACC Championship and a fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth.
Mabe joined the Demon Deacons prior to the 2001 campaign from Young Harris College in Georgia where he served as the recruiting coordinator for the Mountain Lions. He helped guide the team to its best seasons in school history, setting records for wins both years. During Mabe's stint at Young Harris, the team signed 11 players who eventually drafted by major league teams and nine USA Today Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Holmes becomes the pitching coach at his alma mater, having been a standout pitcher for Wake Forest from 1994-97. He had a three-year career in the Oakland A's system and was a California League All-Star and was called the Best Control Pitcher in Single-A by Baseball America in 1998. Last season, Holmes served as the team's administrative assistant and this summer was the pitching coach for the Brewster Whitecaps in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
"We are extremely excited to have these two energetic young men on our staff. Jamie brings experience and new energy to our recruiting coordinator position. His familiarity with North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia high schools, his knowledge of the national junior college programs and his experience as a head coach in collegiate summer baseball is particularly welcomed," Greer said. "I am honored to have Michael Holmes as pitching coach. He is an outstanding teacher, motivator and has professional experience which we needed in our program as many of our pitchers have been high draft picks. To have one of your own come back to coach with you is a thrill of a lifetime for me."
"I'm looking forward to continuing to work under Coach Greer and with some talented, top-quality student-athletes," Mabe said.
""I'm excited to have the opportunity to coach at my alma mater, to work under a great coach like Coach Greer and to work with quality kids. There is a lot of excitement around the program coming off a championship year and I'm proud to be a part of it," Holmes said.
