The Wake Forest women's basketball program announced the schedule for its upcoming season on Tuesday. The 2001-02 slate features 27 regular-season games, including 14 home contests. Ten opponents participated in post-season play in 2001, while five of those teams were ranked among the nation's top 25 at the conclusion of last season.
"I am excited about our schedule," said Wake Forest head coach Charlene Curtis. "It allows us to play a diverse group of opponents. I think our home schedule is very positive. Our fans should enjoy seeing the teams we bring in this year."
The Demon Deacons open the 2001-02 campaign at home against local rival Appalachian State on Monday, Nov. 19. Curtis, entering her fifth season with the Deacon program, will host her alma mater, Radford, on Nov. 21. The November home schedule wraps up with Connecticut, a 2001 NCAA Final Four participant, visiting Winston-Salem on Nov. 26.
The December portion of the schedule features five contests with in-state opponents plus a trip north just before the holidays. The month begins with WFU's ACC opener at North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Dec. 5. The Deacs then host UNC Wilmington and UNC Asheville with a short trip to High Point University in between. Following a road trip to Western Michigan and Valparaiso, WFU returns home to host NC State in its conference home opener on Dec. 30.
The Deacs then ring in the new year with a full slate of ACC games, starting with a home tilt versus Georgia Tech on Jan. 3. Two home league games, North Carolina (Jan. 21) and Maryland (Feb. 24), will be broadcast regionally as part of the ACC television package. Both TV games will take place at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Annex.
"Although the ACC is traditionally always difficult, I think the league will be very balanced this year," Curtis said. "From top to bottom there are teams capable of winning many games."
All regular season home games, except for the two mentioned previously, are scheduled for the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Fans can get a sneak peek at the 2001-02 Demon Deacons on Nov. 9, when the team hosts Basketball Travelers in a exhibition contest at Reynolds Gymnasium.
Post-season action begins in Greensboro, N.C. with the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which is the oldest women's conference tournament in the country.
Wake Forest returns 11 letterwinners and three starters from a squad that posted an 11-17 record in 2000-01, its best mark in four seasons.
Schedule Notes
* Not only will coach Charlene Curtis welcome her alma mater, Radford, to town on Nov. 21, she will also reunite with UConn head coach Geno Auriemma on Nov. 26. Curtis was an assistant under Auriemma at UConn from 1995-97.
* WFU will face two new opponents on this year's slate - Valparaiso and Norfolk State. Additionally, the Deacons are playing UNC Wilmington for the first time in 11 seasons and Western Carolina for the first time in 10 years.
* Wake Forest will face Appalachian State in its season opener for the second year in a row. Last year, the Deacs defeated the Mountaineers, 83-60, in Boone.
* Three members of the Deacon squad will travel to (or near) their hometowns on non-conference road trips this season, including LaTisha Pearson (Birmingham, AL), Tiffani Listenbee (Clinton Township, MI) and Adell Harris (High Point, NC).
* Five opponents on this year's schedule were ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 at the end of last season, including No. 3 UConn, No. 8 Duke, No. 16 NC State, No. 22 Clemson and No. 25 Florida State. These five teams plus ACC opponents Virginia and Maryland all advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, with the Huskies appearing in the Final Four. Deacon opponents Georgia Tech and UAB received bids to the post-season Women's NIT, with the Blazers advancing to the round of eight in that event.
* Entering the 2001-02 season, Charlene Curtis needs just eight more victories to reach the 200-win plateau for her career.
* The Demon Deacons begin practice for the 2001-02 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 13.
