WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer team wrapped up its exhibition season Monday evening with a 6-1 victory over Elon University. Sophomore Katherine Winstead led the 22nd ranked Demon Deacons with three goals. The midfielder from Raleigh, NC, also earned an assist on another score. Wake Forest dominated the three thirty-minute periods, taking 30 shots and only allowing 3.
"We really passed well and played unselfish," said Tony da Luz, who enters his fifth season as the head coach at Wake Forest. "We played with great discipline and I am very pleased. We had a chance to play everybody and I feel real good about our depth."
Joline Charlton got the Demon Deacons on the board in the ninth minute when she scored from a pass from A.B. Robbins. Charlton passed a ball from Courtney McCrudden a few minutes later to Winstead for the game-winning goal. Winstead scored the next two goals for Wake Forest. With her back to the goal, Winstead tapped her third goal in with her heel. She then assisted a goal by Stacy Roeck to give the Deacs a 5-0 advantage. Lindsey Griffin came off the bench and capped off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the third period.
With just over five minutes left to play, Jessica Mills launched a long bomb over the outstretched hands of Wake Forest backup keeper, Colleen Vena, to put the Fighting Phoenix on the board.
Wake Forest will return to action Sunday, Sept. 2, when the Demon Deacons travel to Athens, GA, where they will open their season against Georgia at 2:00 p.m.
