Volleyball goes 3-0 in Deacon Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-The Wake Forest volleyball team wrapped up the tournament today with two key wins over East Carolina and Northwestern. Sophomore right side Ashley Fisher was named MVP and senior middle blocker Margaret Davidson made All-Tournament Team.
Head coach Valorie Baker was pleased with her team's performance this weekend. "I am extremely pleased with the way our team came out to play. We played well against strong competition. Ashlee Phillips mixed the offense up well and Ashley Fisher stepped up on right side. Fisher played well offensively and defensively."
In the first game of the night, the Demon Deacons put away East Carolina in three games, 30-12, 30-28 and 30-24. Senior Trina Maso de Moya led the team with 11 kills and tied with Fisher with 10 digs. Junior setter Phillips directed the Wake Forest offense with 36 assists.
Wake Forest faced Northwestern in the second game, beating the Wildcats 30-21, 30-25 and 33-31. Maso de Moya totaled 15 kills and 12 digs. Phillips led the team with 42 assists and 15 digs.
Other scores for the night include Northwestern defeating Mississippi State in four games, 30-18, 30-17, 20-30 and 30-26. Leading the Wildcats was Molly Kamp with 16 kills and 12 digs. Setter Drew Robertson guided the Wildcat offense with 40 assists.
Mississippi State recovered to defeat East Carolina in four games, 30-28, 26-30, 30-18 and 30-20. Outside hitter Misty Hubenthal totaled 17 kills. Setter Dawn Steinhauser directed the Bulldogs' offense with 40 assists and 20 digs.
The All-Tournament Team includes: Amanda Rudolph (ECU), Jennifer Rousey (MSU), Drew Robertson (NU), Molly Kamp (NU), Margaret Davidson (WF) and Ashley Fisher -MVP (WF).
The Demon Deacons next match is against Idaho State in the Wyoming Invitational in Laramie, Wyo. on Sept. 7.
