WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's tennis team will open the 2001 fall season this weekend by splitting the squad up over two events. Wake Forest will help host the Southeastern Collegiate Invitational Sept. 22-23 and four Demon Deacons will travel to Athens, GA, to compete in the Southern Collegiate Championships, Sept. 21-24.
Head coach Jeff Zinn returns five starters from last year's team in his sixth season at the helm of the Demon Deacons.
The Southeastern Collegiate Invitational will feature 14 teams playing in four different singles flights at four different locations around Winston-Salem. Leighton Stadium and the upper intramural courts up the street are both on Wake Forest's campus and will each host a flight. The Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center will host another flight, as will Salem Tennis Academy. Two rounds will be played each day, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The Southern Collegiate Championships will feature 43 teams playing four singles flights and three doubles flights. Mike Murray, Trent Brendon, David Loewenthal and David Bere will compete for Wake Forest.
Results from the Southeastern Collegiate Invitational will be posted at wakeforestsports.com. Results from the Southern Collegiate Championships will be posted at georgiadogs.com.
Originally scheduled to open the season last weekend at the South Florida Fall Tournament, Wake Forest postponed their trip to Tampa, FL, due to the national tragedies. USF rescheduled the event for Oct. 12-14 and the Demon Deacons will be there.
