Williamsburg, VA - The Wake Forest women's tennis team continued play in its season-opening event, the William & Mary Invitational. The tournament features five singles brackets and two doubles flights. Six members of the Deacon squad are participating in singles, while three doubles teams are also competing for Wake Forest.

One singles player and one doubles team have advanced to the finals in their respective brackets for the Deacons. All other WFU competitors are playing out in consolation brackets at this point of the tournament.

Listed as the top seed in the "William" (A) singles bracket, Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.), a junior, lost her quarterfinal match to Alice Pirsu of Penn in three sets. With a win in the consolation bracket, however, she will continue competing for fifth place on Sunday. Also in the A bracket, junior Maren Haus (Brielle, N.J.) lost her consolation match, also in three sets.

In the "Mary" (B) bracket, sophomore Elizabeth Proctor (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) lost her quarterfinal match but won in consolation, so she will compete for fifth place on Sunday. Sophomore Aimee Smith (Norcross, Ga.) is also continuing play in the B consolation bracket.

Freshmen Katie Martzolf (Indianapolis, Ind.) has advanced to the finals of the "Green" (C) bracket, with two wins straight set wins on Saturday. She will face Alice Sukner of Marshall on Sunday.

Freshman Cathy Sutej (Lewisville, N.C.), competing in "Gold" (D) singles and in doubles with Martzolf, withdrew from competition on Saturday.

The tandem of Bergman and Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.), the top seed in "A" doubles and second-ranked doubles team nationally, advanced to Sunday's finals with an 8-1 victory in Saturday's semifinals. They will face Radeljevic/van Rooyen of Old Dominion for the title tomorrow. Haus and Smith are also still competing in "A" doubles, winning their consolation match on Saturday.

Final-round action in the William & Mary Invitational takes place tomorrow.
