Volleyball Upset By Radford, Losing 3-0

RADFORD, VA - The Wake Forest volleyball team was upset 3-0 Tuesday night by the Radford Highlanders. Radford, 2-6 coming into the match, swept Wake 30-25, 30-26 and 33-31. Wake falls to 6-4 overall and 1-1 ACC after its second consecutive loss of the season.
The Demon Deacons had trouble closing out their games for the match. In the first game, Wake was ahead 17-10 before Radford climbed back pulling the score even at 20 and then finishing the game 30-25. The two teams were tied again in the second game 22 all when the Highlanders pulled ahead by two and Radford senior Katie Sherwood closed the game out with a pair of service aces. Finally in the third, after leading the entire game, Wake let Radford back in, again tying play at 20. Radford broke two Wake chances to take the game, coming out on top 33-31.
Senior Trina Maso de Moya, ACC leader in digs, registered 16 digs and 15 kills for the Demon Deacons. ACC hitting percentage leader senior Margaret Davidson recorded a .421 percentage with 10 kills. Junior Ashlee Phillips, third in the ACC in assists, posted 36.
For the Highlanders, senior Katie Sherwood led the attack with 20 kills. Sherwood tallied a .556 attack percentage. Five Radford players recorded double digits in digs. Sophomore setter Bliss Mulligan led the Highlander offense with 45 assists.
The Deacons have a few days to recover from their loss before they face ACC rivals, North Carolina and NC State at home this weekend. Wake hosts North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and NC State on Saturday, Sept. 29 also at 7 p.m.
