SPRY STADIUM -- The Wake Forest men's soccer team shut out Gardner-Webb 2-0 on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium. Sophomore preseason All-American Brian Carroll buried a penalty kick in the 15th minute and sophomore goalkeeper William Hesmer made four saves for his second shutout of the season to lead the Deacons.
Wake Forest (4-3) controlled the action in the first half, firing 12 shots to Gardner-Webb's five. At the 14:21 mark, freshman forward Tomy Szczypiorski, making his first collegiate start, was hauled down in the penalty area by a defender. Carroll made the Bulldogs pay on the penalty kick, his first goal of the season.
Sophomore Jeremiah White gave the Deacons some insurance in the 38th minute with his fourth goal in three games. After Vicente Bastidas' shot rang off the left post, White collected the rebound and put in past Gardner-Webb keeper Troy Steffan giving Wake Forest a 2-0 lead entering halftime.
The teams played a scoreless second half but got a look at some of the younger players, including freshman Stephen Keel who made his collegiate debut.
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 4-3 while the Bulldogs fall to 1-7 on the season. The Demon Deacons will hit the road for a showdown with Maryland at high noon on Sunday in College Park.
