Women's Tennis In Action At Virginia Tech Fall Invite

BLACKSBURG, VA - The Wake Forest women's tennis team took several players to compete in the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational this weekend. The tournament features two flights for singles and one for doubles. Three members of the Deacon squad are participating in singles, while two doubles teams represent Wake Forest.
After the first day of action, one Demon Deacon doubles team advances to the quarterfinals tomorrow and two singles player advanced to the quarterfinals in Flight A Consolation. The tandem of Katie Martzolf and Aimee Smith defeated Brown/Veith 8-3 to play Kroh/Proctor Saturday at 4 p.m. The duo of Elizabeth Proctor and Cathy Sutej lost by default in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Katie Martzolf fell to Ines Khelifi of Virginia Tech in the first round 7-5, 6-3. In the first round of the Flight A Consolation, Martzolf defeated Elena Berger, Appalachian State, in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. The victory advances Martzolf to the quarterfinals, facing Spencer Brown of James Madison tomorrow at 8 a.m.
After a bye for the first round, sophomore Demon Deacon Aimee Smith was defeated by Alena Mitackova of Hampton in three sets, including two tiebreakers, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (5), 6-4. Smith then defeated Elizabeth Simon from James Madison 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of Flight A Consolation. She advances to the quarterfinals to be played tomorrow morning versus Teodora Doncheva of Appalachian State,
Sophomore Elizabeth Proctor won her first round match versus Alexia Erb, Campbell, in three sets after losing the first set, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Proctor then fell to Carolyn Kramer, James Madison, 6-4, 6-3.
The Demon Deacons will continue action in the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. tomorrow.
