WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team swept NC State Saturday night 30-23, 30-19 and 30-15. It was a team effort with all members participating in the win. Wake Forest improves to 7-5 overall, 2-2 ACC and NC State falls to 5-6 overall, 1-3 ACC.
The Deacon attack was led by seniors Margaret Davidson with 16 kills and Trina Maso de Moya with 16 kills, 16 digs and four service aces. The Deacons controlled the ball for the majority of the match, allowing junior setter Ashlee Phillips to post 44 assists. Sophomore Jessica Hauff stepped up, registering eight kills and three blocks (one solo) of her own and sophomore Sara Beth DeLisle recorded seven kills and 10 digs.
Head coach Valorie Baker was pleased with her team's effort tonight, especially Phillip's execution of distributing the ball to her teammates.
"I thought our players did a great job tonight maintaining their level of intensity during the entire match, regardless of NC State's highs and lows. We needed this win for preparation of next week's matches against Virginia and Maryland," said Baker. "Our center Ashlee Phillips did a tremendous job tonight spreading the offense. Her performance was incredible and made all the difference."
Freshman Lindi Sheppard directed the Wolfpack offense with 14 assists, four kills and seven digs. Other contributors for NC State include freshman Melanie Rowe posting six kills and three digs. Sophomore Caroline Frede had 11 digs of her own.
The Wolfpack was held to a .064 hitting percentage while the Demon Deacons posted a .331 percentage. Wake Forest improves its all-time series record versus NC State to 10-19.
The Demon Deacons' next match is Oct. 2 at home versus UNC Greensboro at 6 p.m.
