WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Valerie Rydberg injured her knee in practice on Thursday. The doctor's determined that Rydberg tore her meniscus and will therefore be out for the remainder of the season.
Head coach Valorie Baker was extremely disappointed about Rydberg's injury. "Valerie was making good progress during preseason. She was vying for a starting position," said Baker. "Her strengths were her ball control and passing on defense. She was very consistent in those areas, which enabled us to run a more diverse offense. She hit the ball extremely well for that early in the season."
"Valerie was showing such potential in preseason that we decided to redshirt her for the 2001 season. We look forward to working with her for four more years," said Baker.
Rydberg, a Lemont, Ill. native, received All-Conference award her junior and senior year in high school. In addition she received the Attitude Award for Outstanding Dedication, Discipline and Perseverance, Best Hitter and MVP of Lemont High School. Rydberg led her team to third place finish in the Jr. Olympics.
