Field Hockey Defeats Penn State

Sept. 30, 2001

State College, Pa. - The Wake Forest field hockey team notched another victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating the 15th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, 2-1. The win was the third in a row for the Deacons and all three have come against teams in the top 15 nationally. The Deacons outshot the Lions 10-3 and improved to 6-3 (0-1 ACC) on the year, while Penn State dropped to 3-5.

The Demon Deacons were first on the board in a game that saw all of the scoring in the first frame. Senior Jemima Cameron struck for the Deacs less than nine minutes into the game, putting one past Penn State goalkeeper Annie Zinkavich to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead. Penn State wasted no time in responding when senior Meredith Shulzitski scored from the edge of the circle to tie the game. It looked as though the teams might head to halftime deadlocked at 1-1, but with 2:49 remaining in the first, Cameron struck again, depositing the ball in the back of the goal and putting the Deacons on top to stay at 2-1.

The second half provided a much more defensive brand of hockey, as Shulzitski took the only shot of the half, but was turned away by Wake Forest goalkeeper Katie Ridd for one of her two saves on the afternoon. Zinkavich made five saves for the Nittany Lions.

The Demon Deacons will not be in action again until Saturday, when they welcome the 2nd-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels to Kentner Stadium. The Deacs will look to sweep the season series with the Heels after defeating Carolina last week in Chapel Hill. The game will be played at 11 a.m.
