NORFOLK, VA - The Wake Forest field hockey team fell to Old Dominion today, despite outshooting the Monarchs, 19-13, evening their record at 2-2 (0-0 ACC). The Deacons came up short in their attempt to avenge their national semifinal loss to the Lady Monarchs in 2000. ODU upped their record to 3-2 (0-0 CAA) with the victory.
Wake jumped out to the early lead when sophomore Lucy Shaw scored her first career goal off a penalty corner from juniors Heather Aughinbaugh and Maria Whitehead nine minutes into the game, but ODU took over from there, scoring three straight goals. With 16:45 to play in the first half, Monarch sophomore Melissa Leonetti took a feed from Lotte Bant and tied the game, 1-1, which is how the score remained at the half.
The teams were still knotted through almost twenty minutes of play in the second half until Old Dominion senior Adrienne Yoder converted a penalty stroke at 15:48 to put ODU on top for the duration. A minute and a half later, ODU senior Julie Miracle pounded in a rebound for the insurance goal, which proved to be the game-winner. The Deacs made a late charge when Aughinbaugh netted her second goal of the year with 2:15 to play in the game, but it was not enough to overcome the defending national champions.
Deacon sophomore keeper Katie Ridd registered eight saves in the loss, while ODU goalie Marianne Freeman stopped six shots.
The Deacons return to action this Friday as they travel to Duke to take on their first ACC opponent of the year. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
