WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Margaret Davidson announced that she would be leaving Wake Forest early to join the new United States Professional Volleyball League. Davidson will become a member of the Chicago Thunder, one of four teams in the league, during its inaugural season. Davidson will be joining Cindy Stern, Clemson graduate and sister of freshman volleyball player Kim Stern. She will be taking the remainder of her classes online and is still projected to graduate in May.
Head coach Valorie Baker is excited for Davidson's opportunity to extend her volleyball career.
"We are very proud of Margaret and her accomplishments. This is a very positive step for our program to have someone asked to play on a United States Professional Volleyball Team," said Baker. "I think this is just a reflection of the caliber athletes that we have the pleasure to work with daily and an indication of the level of play Wake Forest volleyball is striving toward. Margaret can be a very positive, hard working individual who can survive the competitiveness of a professional league."
"Above all, I know she will be an excellent role model for younger players looking to achieve what she has already accomplished."
Davidson finished her career setting new records for Wake in total blocks (472), total blocks per game (1.13 pg) and block assists (388). She was named to the AVCA All-Region team at the end of her senior season. She was named to the second team All-ACC for three consecutive years and made the ACC All-Freshman team for her rookie year campaign. Davidson led the team and finished second in the ACC with a .351 hitting percentage. She also led the team with 1.13 blocks per game.
The USPV is comprised of four teams, the Chicago Thunder, Grand Rapids Force, Minnesota Chill and St. Louis Quest in its inaugural season. Its mission is to add four more teams each year until the league reaches 20 teams. The season will include 36 regular season matches and each team will make the playoffs. Play begins at the beginning of February.
