#14 Women's Soccer to Entertain Cavaliers

The 14th-ranked Wake Forest women??s soccer squad will face the Virginia Cavaliers in the Demon Deacons?? fifth conference match. Wake Forest stands at 12-3-1 overall, 2-1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Confernece, while Virginia owns an overall record of 7-5-2 and 0-3 in the league.
The Deacs meet the Cavaliers for their ninth-straight match-up. Virginia leads the series 6-2, with the last game favoring the Wahoos, 2-0, in Charlottesville. In eight games, Virginia has shutout Wake Forest four times and had only given up six goals, while scoring 19. The Deacs?? 12-3-1 beginning is the best start of Tony da Luz??s career at Wake Forest and the best start since the program began in 1994.
#11 Wake Forest Cages Colorado College
The Wake Forest women's soccer team earned its fifth shutout of the 2002 season, defeating Colorado College, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in Spry Stadium. The 11th-ranked Demon Deacons now stand at 12-3-1 overall, while the Tigers fall to 6-7-1.
It was an all-around effort for Wake Forest, as four different Demon Deacons scored in the victory. Junior Katherine Winstead earned her ninth goal of the season at the 18:26 mark of the first half, on a cross from Sara Creighton. At the end half, freshman Sarah Kozey came off the bench and found the back of the net after a Tracy Chao shot bounced off of the crossbar.
Meagan Mullins put the Deacs up by three at the 62:16 mark, scoring on a wild shot that was deflected by Colorado College. Melanie Schneider scored the final goal of the game with eight minutes left, on an assist from Kozey.
"We just had a great contribution today from our bench, with Kozey and Mullins scoring goals," stated Coach da Luz. "Gabi Lieb did a great job on creating plays. This was a great win and will help us get ready for end of the season competition."
The Wake Forest defense held Colorado College to three shots, including one in the first half. Kozey led the Deac's 21-shot effort with four, followed by Tracy Chao and Alena Thom with three each. Wake keeper Erin Regan was credited with one save, while Colorado College keeper Meghann Loseke recorded 11.
Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia comes into Saturday??s match-up looking for its first conference victory, as the Cavaliers have started off 0-3 in ACC action.
So far this season, Virginia has posted victories over St. Joesph??s, Dartmouth, George Mason, William and Mary, Temple, UAB and James Madison. Loses for the Cavaliers have come at the hands of UCLA, West Virginia, Clemson and Maryland, while tying with USC and Richmond.
Virginia is coming off of a 2-1 loss at North Carolina on Oct. 19.
100 All-Time Victories
With the 4-2 victory over UNCG on Sept. 25, the Wake Forest women??s soccer program earned its 100th all-time victory. The program??s record now stands at 103-71-12 since beginning in 1994. The Deacs look to continue their outstanding start on Oct. 26 against Virginia.
Blue-Collar Deacs
The 2002 women??s soccer squad has dubbed themselves as a ??blue-collar?? team and taken it to the next level. The Deacs know that it is going to take a lot of effort this year if they want to be successful. They have decided as a team to work hard and earn every goal. ??Our theme has been 'blue-collar'. This team is a blue-collar team; we're going to work through everything,?? stated Coach da Luz. ??They've created more opportunities for themselves through teamwork, pressure and trapping for goals than our prior teams have been able to do."
So far the efforts have paid off as the ??blue-collar?? Deacs are 12-3-1 and beating opponents in every category.
Breaking Records
Junior Alena Thom tallied three assists against Elon (Sept. 3), setting a single-game record in that category. The record was most recently held by Katherine Winstead with two assists against Tulane on October 12, 2001.
Senior Joline Charlton is also looking to break several records this season. She currently is second in season points (24) and shots (71), third in goals (10) and fourth (7) in assists. In career records, Charlton is tied for third with Stacey Roeck in career points (59), fourth in goals (22) and shots (161).
Senior Liz McDowell slipped into the third spot in career games started with 80, tied with Stacey Roeck.
She has started in all 16 games this season to go along with the 64 starts she already owned. McDowell is four starts away from becoming Wake??s all-time leader in career games started.
With her two points (one goal) against Colorado College, junior midfielder Katherine Winstead is now tied with Karli Schilling with 23 points in a season. Winstead is 10 points away from become the all-time leader in that category. Also in the Colorado College game, Winstead became tied for fourth place in season goals with Stacey Roeck and Emily Taggert (9).
Wake in the ACC
As a team, Wake Forest is second in the ACC in goals allowed per game with 0.94, second in shots per game with 16.38, second in goals against average with 0.91 and tied for second with five shutouts. The Deacs are second in points per game, averaging 7.44 per contest, third in assists per game with 2.56 and third in goals per game with 2.44.
Individually, several Deacs appear in the statistical categories as well. Katherine Winstead ranks seventh in goals (9), fifth in points (23) and, along with Sarah Kozey, is tied for ninth with 2.5 shots per contest.
Alena Thom is tied for 10th with Alli Hunt in assists (.380 apg) and sixth with 1.38 points per game. Thom is also fifth in shots per game (2.88).
Goalkeeper Erin Regan ranks second with 0.98 goals against average.
The Deacs vs. Opponents
Wake Forest has dominated the field this season, leading their opponents in every category. The Deacs have outshot opponents 261 to 129, including 144 shots on goal to their opponents?? 63. Wake has scored 39 goals on the season and only allowed 15. The Deacs have held opponents to 47 points while tallying 118. Wake has recorded 40 assists on the season as well.

Injury Report
Senior Lindsey Griffin is out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. She will receive a medical redshirt and return to competition next season for the Deacs.

The top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels march into Spry Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 pm. This will mark the 15th meeting beteen the two programs, with the Demon Deacons only owning one win against the Tar Heels.
Getting To Spry Stadium
At the I-40/Business-40 split, take Business-40 towards downtown Winston-Salem. Take the Cherry Street exit and proceed north through the downtown area. Cherry Street then becomes University Parkway. Continue past Joel Coliseum on the right and then bear left at the fork in the road. Approximately one mile past the Coliseum, take the Polo Road exit and make a left turn on Polo Road. Spry Stadium will be 1/2 mile ahead on the left. Turn left onto campus at the stoplight and take the first road to the right to access the parking lot. No parking pass is necessary.
