Murray, Bere and Loewenthal Advance To Round of 16

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team has been elminated from doubles play at the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships, but has advanced three Demon Deacons to the Round of 16 in singles action. David Bere and David Loewenthal won their first two singles matches to advance and Mike Murray continues his streak as he won two more singles matches to go with his three wins in qualifying play.
Murray came back from behind to defeat Sasa Ljumic from Campbell 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of singles and then beat Daniel Pinchbeck from North Carolina in straight sets in the second round by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Murray, who has won five straight singles matches in the last three days, advances to the Round of 16, where he will meet Angelo ingles action. David Bere topped Santiago Falla from Charleston Southern 6-1, 7-5 in the first round of singles and then defeated Chip Webb from Florida State 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the second round. He will face Florian Marquardt from Virginia Commonwealth in the Round of 16 Saturday morning.
David Loewenthal stopped Chris Gonyer from Virginia 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of singles and then rallied to beat Duke's Jonathan Stokke 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round. He will square off against Clayton Almeida from Winthrop Saturday at noon in the Round of 16.
Derrick Spice made quick work of Zalan Kiss from Charleston Southern, winning 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of singles, but then fell 6-4, 6-4 to Timo Siebert from the College of Charleston in the second round.
After winning three straight singles matches the last two days in qualifying play to advance to the main draw, Trent Brendon lost 6-4, 7-6 (4) to Romain Jurd from Florida State in the first round.
Murray and Andrew Simpson fell 8-6 to Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd from Florida State in the second round of doubles action, ending a four match run through qualifying play and the first round of the main draw.
