WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Virginia Saturday night at Spry Stadium. Darci Borski scored both goals for the Cavaliers, bookending the lone Demon Deacon score from Katie Johnson.
Wake Forest stopped a shot from Lindsay Gusick in the 26th minute, but didn't get it cleared as Borski pocketed the rebound into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 Virginia lead. The Demon Deacons struck back less than three minutes later when Joline Charlton took a cross from Melanie Schneider and played it to Johnson at the top of the goalie box, who slotted it into the lower left corner. Johnson's goal, her fourth of the season, knotted the score at 1-1, where it remained for the rest of the half.
Borski struck again seven minutes into the second half when she received a through ball from Sarah Lane on a breakaway and nailed the game-winning goal for the Wahoos. Wake Forest turned up the pressure, moving Charlton up front from her starting spot at defense to lead a Demon Deacon attack that had all five second half shots either on goal, or just high of the crossbar.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Regan made five saves on the day for Wake Forest and Virginia goalkeeper Anne Abernethy came up with three.
Virginia improves to 8-5-2 overall and 1-4 in the ACC with the win and Wake Forest falls to 12-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the ACC with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 30 vs. No. 2 North Carolina at Spry Stadium.
