WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The top-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team blasted visiting Gardner-Webb 10-0 on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium. Ten different Wake Forest players scored for the Deacons in their most lopsided victory in 19 years. It was the second time in school history the Deacons scored in double digits, the most goals scored by a Wake Forest team since 1983.
Oddly enough, Wake Forest (11-0-4) led just 1-0 at halftime despite controlling the action. Wes Allen's header off a Justin Moose corner kick was the only tally.
After Stephen Keel's penalty kick in the 51st minute, the floodgates opened. Wake Forest buried nine goals in less than 29 minutes. Adam Hakes led the goal parade (54th minute), followed by Scott Sealy (59th), Gideon Coronel (63rd), Jeremiah White (66th), Brent Pridgen (73rd), Bobby Gehring (74th), Grey Ballard (76th) and finally Tomy Szczypiorski (80th).
For Allen, Coronel, Pridgen and Szczypiorski, it was each of their first career goals. It was also the career debut for Pridgen who scored on his first career shot, a left-footed blast from eight yards out.
Senior goalkeeper Brad McEachern made the start or Wake Foret and made two saves before giving way to sophomore Kenny Killfoil for the final 11 minutes. Killfoil was making his career debut and did not need to make a save as Wake Forest recorded its seventh shutout of the season.
The Deacons outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 29-4 on the night. Rio Oros made 11 saves for Gardner-Webb (0-14-3), including several from point blank range.
It was the most Wake Forest goals since a 17-1 victory over St. Andrew's. In that game, Mark Erwin, the NCAA's leading scorer that year buried a school record seven goals.
Wake Forest closes the book on the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season on Friday night at Duke. Kickoff against the Blue Devils is set for 7:00 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. The Deacons, undefeated on the season and in the ACC, is actually in second place behind Maryland. The Deacons, however, can win the regular season title with a win over Duke and a loss or tie by Maryland against Virginia.
