Maryland Slips By Demon Deacons, 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team out hit Maryland, but came up short where it counts, losing 3-1 Saturday night at Reynolds Gym. The Demon Deacons (7-9, 2-2 ACC) jumped out to an early lead over the Terrapins (12-7, 1-3) winning the first match 30-25, hitting .389 as a team. Wake Forest cooled off in game two and Maryland heated up as the visitors won 30-24. Falling behind in the match with a 30-22 loss in game three the Deacons mounted a fourth game rally, but couldn't stop the Terps, losing the match-deciding game 31-29.
Four Deacs hit .400 or better for the match as Ashlee Phillips hit .455 with six kills, Sara Beth DeLisle hit .429 with 11 kills, Chirsty Williams hit .400 with six kills and Erin Borhart hit .500 with two kills. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Valerie Rydberg had a .324 attack percentage, leading Wake Forest with 17 kills and 13 digs. Phillips played in three of the four games and posted 42 assists, while Borhart dished out 12 assists in one game. Sophomore middle blocker Kim Stern led the squad with a career-high seven blocks, including two solo stuffs, to go with 14 kills and a .346 hitting percentage.
Carey Brennan led Maryland with 25 kills and 15 digs to go with four blocks. Lynnsy Jones hit .452 with 18 kills and Lindsay Davey had 61 assists. Stephanie Smith posted five blocks for the Terrapins.
Wake Forest returns to action next week when the Demon Deacons step out of conference play to host Liberty at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Reynolds Gym.
