RALEIGH, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer program received seven honors at the Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer pre-tournament banquet on Wednesday night in Raleigh.
Juniors Brian Carroll, William Hesmer and Jeremiah White were named to the All-ACC first team by the league's coaches. Freshmen Justin Moose and Michael Parkhurst made the second team. Head Coach Jay Vidovich was selected by his peers as the ACC Coach of the Year and Moose was also selected as the conference's Rookie of the Year.
Carroll, a midfielder from Springfield, Va., was named as one of 15 finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy and a Soccer America Preseason All-American earlier this year. He has started all 18 games with three goals and six assists on the season. Two of his goals have been against ACC competition. Carroll was a second team selection as a sophomore last year.
Hesmer, a goalkeeper from Wilson, N.C., became Wake Forest's career leader in goals against average earlier this fall. He set a new Wake Forest single season record with nine shutouts and ranks ninth nationally with a 0.59 goals against average. During one stretch this season, he did not allow a goal for more than 569 minutes.
White, a forward from Lansdowne, Pa., makes a second straight appearance on the ACC First Team. He has scored goals in nine of his 13 games this year, including goals against five of the six other ACC teams. He has ten goals and five assists. Four of his goals have been of the game-winning variety. White is the leading scorer on a Wake Forest offense that ranks seventh nationally in scoring.
Moose, a forward from Statesville, N.C., has four goals and eight assists as a rookie. He needs three assists to set a new Wake Forest single season record. Moose handed out assists in three ACC games and scored goals in his first two games as a Deacon against Saint Louis and Akron.
Parkhurst, a from Cranston, R.I., is the central defender for a Deacon defense that has allowed a league-best ten goals. He started every single game this season and has helped Wake Forest rank third nationally in goals against average. Parkhurst is just one of four defenders to make the All-ACC teams.
Vidovich is in his ninth year as head coach. It is his first ACC Coach of the Year award and he is the first Wake Forest men's soccer coach to receive the honor since George Kennedy in 1981. Vidovich led the Deacons to a school record 14 wins, an undefeated regular season, its first ACC regular season title and first number one national ranking this season. Earlier this fall, Vidovich won his 100th game at Wake Forest.
Wake Forest highlighted the 2002 All-ACC Teams with five athletes, while Clemson, Maryland and North Carolina each placed four to the team, as selected by the league's seven head coaches. Virginia and Duke rounded out the teams adding three and two selections, respectively.
