Murray Advances At Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team took some hits Saturday at the Burrows/Burleson Virginia Tech Invitational. Both Demon Deacon doubles teams were eliminated and only Mike Murray remains undefeated in singles play. David Bere and Brett Ross have advanced in consolation singles play though.
Murray beat teammate Trent Brendon 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the top singles flight. He will play Ivor Lovrak from Baylor Sunday morning in the semifinals. Murray and Ross lost a heartbreaker to Virginia Tech's Kurz and Laulund, 9-7 in the quarterfinals of the top doubles flight.
Ross worked over Donald Miles from Davidson 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of consolation play and then advanced past Virginia Tech's David Emery 6-1, 1-0 (ret. inj.) in the consolation quarterfinals. He will face Darrin Cohen from Virginia in the consolation semifinals Sunday morning.
Brendon and David Loewenthal beat Liberty's Rino and Ricardo Shinozake 8-3 in the quarterfinals of the top doubles flight, but then lost 8-6 to Almeida and Kwiecien from Winthrop in the semifinals. Loewenthal dropped a 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-4 decision to Andreas Laulund from Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals of the top singles flight.
Bere came back from behind to beat Chris Varga from Ball State 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of consolation singles play and then earned a straight set victory over the Hokie's Michael Kurz in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-3. He will take on Angel Diankov from Virginia Tech in the finals of the Maroon Consolation draw.
Brian Murphy lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to Paul Newman from Ball State in the quarterfinals of the singles B Flight.
