Wake Forest vs. SMU Postgame Quotes December 15, 2002

Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser... On the game: "It's good to come out of exams and get a win. Exams a very trying experience at Wake Forest, a lot of extra time in study hall, a lot of extra time with tutors, and a lot of missed practice time. I think we beat a good SMU team. I think Coach Dement did a wonderful job changing defenses, kept us off balance. I thought we guarded pretty well. I thought we did a very good job defending [Quintin] Ross, and we rebounded the ball well. When we guard and rebound well, we'll have a chance, and I thought we did that today."

On guarding Quintin Ross: "We made a conscious effort to talk about Ross. Dino Guadio who had the SMU scouting did a terrific job telling our kids their strengths and what we had to take away from them... We tried to simulate their offense pretty well and I think Josh and Jamaal would be the first to tell you it was a team effort."

On Josh Howard: "Time will tell [on the rest of the team stepping up], certainly he did what we needed him to do last Wednesday, and there will certainly be games where we'll need him to do that again. Tonight, he didn't shoot the ball too well, which has been surprising because he's worked so hard. He shot the ball very well in practice. Fortunately, the rest of the kids stepped up. We are far from a juggernaut offensively, but we made enough baskets. I think 20 assists on 25 baskets, and out rebounded them, so we're not just standing around out there."

Rebounding: "I'm always concerned about rebounding. It's something we always spend a lot of time on. We don't shoot it well, so we've got to get it back. I don't think we have much of a chance to be successful in terms of wins and losses, if we don't rebound the ball well."

Sophomore Vytas Danelius... "We can be a strong team. Josh is a great player, but we have a lot of players that can step up and play well."

"We try to out rebound the opponent every game. We practice and do the 'war' drill, and that makes us tougher."

SMU Head Coach Mike Dement...

"Josh and Quintin played hard against each other. I thought Williams and Danelius played very well. This is the third road game we've had, and we didn't rebound the ball offensively pretty well. They didn't shoot it that well on the first shot, but the 16 offensive rebounds hurt us. We have to try to find some help from other people. They were able to win tonight because they got some help."

"Howard was great. Quintin Ross got off to a slow start, he forced some starts and he thought he had some open looks. I thought Howard was great defensively. For Wake's team, if Josh is the only scorer, they'd be going through the same thing we are going through."
