Men's Tennis Rolls Past Virginia Commonwealth 5-2

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 48th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team handed No. 41 Virginia Commonwealth its first loss of the season Friday evening at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Demon Deacons won two doubles matches to capture the team point and then won four of six singles matches to give sixth-year head coach Jeff Zinn his first win over the Rams in six tries.
Wake Forest's David Loewenthal (So., Franklin Lakes, NJ) and Trent Brendon (Jr., Victorville, CA), the 48th-ranked doubles team in the nation, upset the No. 20 team of Florian Marquardt and Pedro Nieto from VCU 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match. In the No. 2 doubles match the Demon Deacon duo of Mike Murray (Jr., St. Petersburg, FL) and Derrick Spice (Fr., N. Olmsted, OH) shut down VCU's Martin Ott and Mats Norin 8-6 securing the doubles point in Wake Forest's favor.
Loewenthal, ranked 30th in singles, made quick work of Nieto, winning in straight sets in the No. 1 singles match by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Spice came up with a huge win at the No. 2 singles match, upsetting 46th-ranked Florian Marquardt 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Murray won in straight sets in the No. 4 singles match, 6-4, 7-5 over Norin and Wake Forest's Justin Kaufmann (Sr., Mission Hills, KS) picked up the No. 6 singles win over Julien Lousao 7-6 (2), 6-3. David Bere (Jr., Midland, MI) fell in the No. 3 singles match to Ott 6-2, 6-4 and Trent Brendon lost 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 5 singles match to Daniel Casquero of VCU.
Wake Forest improves its record to 3-1 with the win and Virginia Commonwealth falls to 7-1. The Demon Deacons return to action 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, following the Wake Forest women's match versus Illinois, Feb. 16. VCU will stick around the Twin City to take on the Golden Gophers Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. All matches will be played at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
