Men's Golf Opens Spring Season at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After posting impressive finishes at major tournaments this past fall, the Wake Forest men??s golf team enters the 2002 spring campaign ranked second nationally, according to the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America) Coaches Poll and the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
The Demon Deacons posted two seconds, a third and a fifth place finish over their final four events this past fall. They return to action early next week, traveling to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. for the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, hosted by the University of North Florida at Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 6,895 yards). Fifteen collegiate teams, including four of Golfweek??s top 10 teams, will play 36 holes on Monday, Feb. 18 followed by the final 18 on Tuesday.
WFU finished seventh at the 2001 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate. The ACC is well represented in the rankings, as Georgia Tech is No. 1, followed by the Deacs. Clemson, ranked fifth, gives the league three teams in the top five nationally. Individually, Wake sophomore Bill Haas is ranked second.
Wake Forest, under head coach Jerry Haas, returns its entire lineup from a team that finished 10th at last year??s NCAA Championships.
