Men's Golf Finishes Fourth at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The second-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team remained in fourth place after the final 18 holes of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, the opening event of the spring season for the Demon Deacon squad. The two-day, 54-hole tournament took place at Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 6,895 yards).
Wake Forest, which had entered the day in fourth place, shot its best score of the tournament, a two-over par 290, to remain in that position. The Deacons finished with a 23-over 887, turning in rounds of 299-298-290.
The University of Florida won the 15-team event, finishing with an eight-over 872. Tennessee, which was tied with Wake Forest entering the final round, used a final round 277 to jump two spots in the standings for second. Host North Florida placed third, three strokes ahead of the Deacons.
Wake Forest junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) finished 10th overall, carding a even 72 on Tuesday to finish at two-over 218 for the tournament (75-71-72). It is Wanner's second top-10 finish of the season and 13th of his career. Wanner finished eight strokes back of individual champion Camilo Villegas of UF.
Deacon sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) and junior Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) finished tied for 26th place. Tied for 28th entering Tuesday's round, both Haas and Yoder carded a one-over 73 to move up two spots in the final standings.
Junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) moved up nine places, finishing 32nd with a 10-over 226. Wilfong showed improvement over the course of the tournament, turning in an even 72 on Tuesday after opening with rounds of 78 and 76.
Senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) finished one stroke back of Wilfong in 39th place with a total of 227 (77-75-75).
The Demon Deacons return to action on March 16-17 at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
