Men's Tennis Beats Up Virginia, 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated Virginia 6-1 Saturday afternoon. The 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons won two of three doubles matches to capture the first point and then took five of six singles matches from the Cavaliers.
David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon stumbled in the No. 1 doubles match, falling 8-4 to Virginia's Michael Duquette and Stephen Nolen, but Wake Forest won the other two doubles matches to secure the team point. Mike Murray and Derrick Spice defeated Virginia's Jonathan Chou and Jason Romesburg 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match while Justin Kaufmann and David Bere handed Cavaliers Jay Curtis and Dillon Walker a 8-3 setback in the No. 3 doubles match.
Loewenthal, Spice, Murray, Brendon and Kaufmann all won their singles matches in straight sets. Loewenthal beat Duquette 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match. Spice defeated Nolen 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match. Murray won the No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-3 over Chou. Brendon stopped Curtis 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match and Kaufmann was victorious over Virginia's Greg Alpery in the No. 6 singles match by the score 7-5, 7-5. David Bere lost 7-6 (6), 6-7, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match to Romesburg.
Wake Forest improves to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with the win and Virginia falls to 8-4 and 0-2 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, March 24 when they play Maryland at 10:00 a.m. in College Park, MD.
