Women's Tennis Falls to North Carolina, 4-3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Eighth-ranked North Carolina upset No. 3 Wake Forest, 4-3, in ACC women??s tennis action on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Demon Deacons drop their first ACC match of the season and fall to 17-3, 3-1 in conference play. The Tar Heels improve to 16-3, 4-0 in the league.
Wake Forest took the early lead by winning the doubles point. The Deacons picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, where the nation??s top-ranked tandem of Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman won 8-3 over UNC??s Marlene Mejia and Julie Rotondi. The Deacs also posted a victory at No. 3 doubles, where the freshman duo of Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz won in a tiebreaker, 9-8(5) over Lee Bairos and Kate Pinchbeck to clinch the doubles point.
Despite winning the doubles point, Wake??s No. 2 singles team of Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith fell to UNC??s 26th-ranked Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, 8-1.
As singles matches got underway, WFU took a 2-0 lead when Bielik, ranked No. 1 nationally, made quick work of Mejia, winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Mejia is ranked 28th nationally. The Tar Heels tied the match at 2-2 by picking up straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 3 singles. At No. 4, Mojzis topped Wake??s Maren Haus, 6-1, 6-1, while 64th-ranked Rotondi defeated Coetzee, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3.
In a battle between two ranked players at No. 2 singles, UNC??s No. 27 Pinchbeck rallied after losing the first set to defeat Wake??s 16th-ranked Bergman, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
With UNC up 3-2 in the match, Cline clinched the match for the Tar Heels at No. 6 singles, defeating Wake??s Schwartz 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Cline broke Schwartz??s serve on her second match point for the victory.
The Demon Deacons tacked on one more victory for the 4-3 final, as Wake??s Martzolf, ranked 108th nationally, came back from dropping the first set to defeat Bairos 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
UNC??s win marked the first time since 1991 that the Tar Heels have defeated Wake Forest, and also halts a 13-match Wake winning streak in the series.
ACC action in the Triangle continues for the Demon Deacons, as they compete at NC State this Saturday, April 6, at 11:00 a.m.
