Wake Forest's number one men's tennis player, David Loewenthal, will begin competition Wednesday in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship at Texas A&M University. The 41st-ranked All-ACC sophomore singles player from Franklin Lakes, NJ will square off against #114 Divan Coetzee from New Mexico in the first round of the 64-player field. Match time is to be announced later. The winner will then advance to the second round on Thursday to face the winner of the first round matchup between #62 Steve Berke from Yale and top-ranked and top-seeded Matias Boeker from Georgia.
Loewenthal owns a singles record of 30-13 this season. Ranked as high as 24th in singles and 27th in doubles, he is tied for second place on the school's single-season victory list with 30 singles wins. Posting a 15-6 dual singles record in the spring, all at the No. 1 flight, Loewenthal jumped out to a seven match winning streak in singles play in the spring, including wins over #50 Saber Kadiri from Virginia Tech and #78 Aleksey Zharinov from Minnesota. He led the Demon Deacons to a 6-1 win over #50 Florida State with a singles victory over #49 Xavier Luscan in straight sets. He also took out #34 Marcio Petrone from North Carolina in straight sets of the ACC Championship semifinal match. A finalist at Regional Championships this past fall, Loewenthal qualified for the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, where he advanced to the quarterfinals, upsetting #81 Xavier Luscan from Florida State, #39 Florian Marquardt from Virginia Commonwealth, #19 Tiago Ruffoni from Auburn and #50 Robert Gutsafsson from Middle Tennessee along the way.
Wake Forest finished the season 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons were selected to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and lost in the first round to fifth-ranked and second-seeded Tennessee, in Knoxville. Wake Forest head coach Jeff Zinn returns five of six starters next season.
