STANFORD, Calif. - Top-seeded Bea Bielik of Wake Forest advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship after cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Megan Bradley of UCLA on Wednesday morning at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. In the current national rankings, Bielik is ranked No. 2 while Bradley is No. 3.
??Today was more of a tactical match for me,?? Bielik said. ??I have to play a certain way to be effective and today I was able to execute in all areas of my game. Everything felt really good today. I just have to concentrate on playing percentage tennis.??
Bielik??s next match will have an ACC flavor, as she will face North Carolina??s Kate Pinchbeck at 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Pinchbeck, ranked 14th nationally, upset eighth-seeded Lauren Kalvaria of Stanford in her third-round match Wednesday. Tomorrow??s quarterfinal will mark the first meeting between Bielik and Pinchbeck.
The Deacon duo of Bielik and Janet Bergman also began play on Wednesday in the first two rounds of the NCAA Doubles Championship. Seeded second in the 32-team bracket, Wake posted a 6-3, 6-2 first-round victory over Notre Dame??s Katie Cunha/Lindsey Green. In the second round they faced Hillary Adams and Kelly McCain of Duke, a team that had defeated the Deacs, 9-7, earlier this season. The Duke duo emerged as winners again, posting a 6-4, 6-3 victory over WFU.
The tandem of Bergman and Bielik, however, finished their run as one of the most successful doubles teams in school history. The duo ranks third all-time with 74 victories and tied the school??s single-season record with 32 wins in 2002. They also made three straight trips to the NCAAs, finishing as quarterfinalists in 2000 and ??01.
