Loewenthal Goes Three Sets Before Falling In Round Two

COLLEGE STATION, TX - Wake Forest men's tennis player, David Loewenthal, took the number one singles player in the nation, Matias Boeker from Georgia, to three sets before losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship at Texas A&M University Thursday afternoon. Loewenthal, the 41st-ranked All-ACC sophomore singles player from Franklin Lakes, NJ, jumped out to an early lead on the top-seeded Boeker by winning the first set 6-2 and taking a 4-2 lead in the second set. Boeker stormed back and won the next ten straight games to seal the match and advance to the Round of 16.
Loewenthal finishes the year with a 31-14 singles record, the second best season win total in school history. His career total of 60 singles victories leaves him only four shy of cracking the school's top ten all-time wins list - at only the halfway point of his collegiate career.
Wake Forest ended the season 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons were selected to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and lost in the first round to Final Four bound, fifth-ranked and second-seeded Tennessee, in Knoxville. Wake Forest head coach Jeff Zinn returns five of six starters next season.
