Bere Advances To Quarterfinals At ITA Summer Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Wake Forest men's tennis players David Bere and Andrew Simpson were in action over the weekend, competing in the ITA National Summer Championships Open at Indiana University. The Demon Deacon duo advanced to the second round of doubles action before falling and Simpson dropped his first round singles match, but Bere has moved to the quarterfinals of singles play.
The ITA National Summer Championships, presented by the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit. This event features amateur (mainly collegiate) players from throughout the country. The tournament concludes Wednesday.
The singles and doubles champions from the ITA National Summer Championships earn wild cards into the first national tournaments of the 2002-03 season - the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in October (the finalists earn wild cards into the qualifying tournaments).
Bere, who hails from Midland, Mich., is heading into his senior year at Wake Forest. He defeated Rajeev Emany from Columbia 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and Virginia Tech's David Emery 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. Bere followed those up with a third round victory over Pete Stroer from Texas, winning 6-7, 6-4 (11-9) to advance to the quarterfinals.
In doubles action Bere and Simpson picked up an 8-6 first round win over mixed pair Vineeth Gossain from Michigan and Jimmy McGuire from Michigan State. The Wake Forest partners lost 9-8 (4) in the second round to the Texas tandem of Drew Hoskins and Stroer.
